ABOUT THE PIECE
The story behind it.
A Japanese-inspired Black & Grey tattoo study created on synthetic practice skin, featuring a koi fish captured in a flowing, dynamic pose.
The curved body, expressive fins and carefully detailed scales create a sense of movement and visual rhythm throughout the composition.
The primary focus was on consistent scale patterns, controlled shading, strong contrast and the development of three-dimensional form. Deep black tones define the curvature of the body, while lighter spaces between the scales maintain clarity and separation.
In Japanese tattoo tradition, the koi fish is often associated with perseverance, resilience and overcoming adversity.
This piece represents an early stage of my tattooing journey, focused on improving precision, tonal balance and the execution of complex, repetitive details.
